Ghana to award players in tourism industry


Mr Alexander Kwame Nketia, Acting Northern Regional Manager of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) on Tuesday said the authority would continue with its National Tourism Awards (NTA).

He said the NTA is determined to award recognise people in the tourism industry.

Mr Nketia was speaking in Tamale during the media launch of the 2013 National Tourism Awards, which is slated for December 13.

Throwing more light on the awards, he said the venue for the NTA would keep changing from region to region and that another objective of the NTA is to encourage competition among players in the tourism industry.

The programme, which was on the theme: “Tourism: Gaining a competitive edge through innovation and service excellence,” was aimed at creating awareness of the NTAs in the Northern Region. cont reading at

CHRAJ is being too slow on SADA – MP suggests

The Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region has criticized the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for what he says is the slow pace of investigations into the operations of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA).

Tamale Hospital: Equipment theft stalls work at Neurosurgical unit

Work at the Neurosurgical Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) has stalled following the theft of some vital surgical equipment at the unit.

As a result, the unit has not been able to carry out any surgical operation for more than a week, leading to fears that patients with critical conditions might lose their lives.

The centre, which is fully booked for neurosurgical operations for the next three months, caters for patients in the entire northern sector and other parts of the country as well as some referral cases from Burkina Faso.

Even though the hospital authorities have confirmed the theft, they declined to give details. They, however, indicated that the theft had been reported to the police. No arrest has been made yet.

3000 UDS students begin practical training


Professor Haruna Yakubu, Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale, has appealed to Government and other stakeholders to support the University financially to maintain its field practicals programme.

He said with their limited resources, inadequate funding has been a major challenge facing the University in the implementation of the field programme and this is in addition to the increase in the student in-take.

Prof Yakubu made the appeal at the opening session of the 2013 Third Trimister Field Practical Programme (TTFPP) in Sunyani on Monday where 3,333 Level 100 students were dispatched to 33 communities in 10 districts in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

He said TTFPP was an integral part of the university’s curriculum to ensure that both students and staff work closely with rural and deprived communities with the focus on enhancing the poverty reduction programme. read more at

Speaker swears in new Kumbungu MP

Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, Speaker of Parliament, on Tuesday swore-in the newly elected Member of Parliament for Kumbungu constituency, in the Northern region, Mr Amadu Moses Yahya, when the House reconvened after a period of recess.

Mr Yahya, a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has replaced the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, who resigned his position after he was appointed Executive Secretary of the ACP/EU.

Mr Yahaya swore the oath of allegiance and the oath of a Member of Parliament.

NGOs express concern about lack of midwives in Upper East


The Coalition of NGOs in Health have expressed concern about the lack of midwives in most of the health facilities in the Upper East Region.

This, the body said is hampering the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Mr Alagskomah Asakeya Noble, Vice Chairman of the Coalition, expressed the worry at this year’s 2013 Regional Health Forum organised in Bolgatanga, on the theme: “Improving Quality Healthcare for all- Citizens Rights and Responsibilities. “

Gender Minister urges authorities to report on brothels

Nana Oye Lithur, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, has urged local government assemblies and traditional authorities to report the existence of brothels to the Police.

“Their activities are even more unfortunate when they involve under-age girls,” the Minister stated on Tuesday when she inspected two demolished brothels located within Tema New Town in the Greater Accra Region.

The Minister, who ordered the demolition of the two brothels, said it was unfortunate that such places lured not only adult women but also girls, who were far below the age of consent, to practice prostitution.

Police intercepts trucks smuggling subsidised fertilizer into Burkina Faso

Police in Bawku have intercepted two trucks carrying two thousand bags of government subsidised fertilizer they believe were being smuggled to neighboring Burkina Faso.

The trucks which took off from Tema were to offload in Tamale. But Police say when the trucks reached Tamale, documentations on the fertilizer were changed and the drivers instructed to continue to Bawku. CONT READING AT

Hajj Committee announces package for 2013 pilgrimage

The National Hajj Committee (NHC) has said it was ready to ensure an incident free pilgrimage for Ghanaian Muslims this year.
Mr Ibrahim Abdul-Rauf Tanko, Chairman of the Committee, told journalists at a briefing to announce the 2013 Hajj package that Ghana had already paid in advance services for 6,780 prospective pilgrims, the maximum quota given to the committee.

The Hajj package include accommodation and transport services in Saudi Arabia, flight, food and other services.

Mr Tanko said each prospective pilgrim would pay a total amount of $3,450 or its cedi equivalent.

Ministry takes steps to solve chieftaincy problems

The Ministry of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs has taken steps to solve the numerous problems besetting the administration of chieftaincy in the country.
Dr H. Seidu Daannaa, sector Minister, announced this at an emergency meeting of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs in Koforidua on Friday.

He said the Ministry had requested all Regional Houses of Chiefs to advertise in the media the position of a counsel and make their recommendation to the Ministry after interviewing the applicants.

School dropout rate high in Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District

Upper East regional minister calls for immediate halt on galamsey in the region

Upper East regional minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohamed-Muniru, has directed all illegal galamsey operators in the region to stop operating with effect from Thursday May 16.

Pregnant women in danger

About nine thousand (9,000) pregnant women in Ghana will die by 2020 if the high anaemia levels among expectant mothers are not brought under control.

According to the Ghana Demographic Health Survey, the number of pregnant women with anaemia soared from 65 per cent to 70 per cent between 2003 and 2008.

Mosquito net use increases in Northern Ghana

Mosquito netAn independent evaluation report by the United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF) has shown an increase in mosquito nets ownership in the northern part of Ghana.
The document shows that mosquito ownership increased in the region from 60 per cent in 2011 to 90 per cent in 2013, due to campaigns embarked upon to encourage the use of the nets.
According to the report released to the GNA in Accra, the innovative Hang Up Your Net Campaign, conducted by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) with support from the Department of International Development (DFID) and UNICEF led to the increase in mosquito net ownership.
It said, in the Upper East Region, only 52 per cent of households owned a mosquito net in 2011, but after the Hang Up Campaign, it rose to 94 per cent.cont.reading

SADA, NADMO hold disaster risk reduction forum



A regional forum on the implementation of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) project on Disaster Risks Reduction (DRR) in the Northern Savanna Ecological Zone of Ghana, was organized in Bolgatanga on Thursday.
The event that was jointly organized by SADA and the National Disaster Mobilization Organisation (NADMO), was aimed at discussing ways of harnessing resources and energies towards the successful implementation of the second phase of the DRR .

Kokombas and Bimobas agree to peace deal


Kokombas and Bimobas have agreed to a peace deal to end their protracted conflict.

The feuding factions in Nakpanduri in the Northern region have been fighting over a parcel of land, killing and injuring many.
